Music I Just Bought - Fighting Aurora

To be fair, I must start out by saying that I did not actually buy Fighting Aurora's Acoustic EP album. It was given to me by the artist, a friend of my boyfriend. Fighting Aurora is Gordy. Gordy is cool. He used to deliver pizza for my boyfriend, and my boyfriend designed the album cover for Fighting Aurora's previous cd called 'Save it for a Rainy Day'. My boyfriend has never been a huge fan of Gordy's style, but I love it and I listen to Rainy Day all the damn time. I was totally stoked to get his new cd, just out of the blue. My boyfriend comes home and says "Gordy sent this for you."

woot! I heart you gordy! http://www.myspace.com/fightingaurora

anyhow. I like music for all kinds of reasons. Sometimes because its bad, sometimes because its unique, sometimes because I like one certain bass line, guitar riff, or drum beat. I like fighting aurora because he writes some really good music. I don't actually know most of the words to the songs because its the music I am listening to. That is something that doesn't happen often, since I'm a words girl. Coheed and Cambria I think is the last band I loved where it's about the music and not the words.

It's got layers and pretty pieces and stuff that's hidden unless you've got it up just loud enough to hear it all.

The new album is a bit too emo for my advanced age, but that doesn't mean its bad. It just means I'm not a teenager anymore *pouts*. Number 5 is my favorite - 'Nights Like These'. Its got the piano and the violins and I can't resist that stuff.

Thank you gordy!

The Book I Just Read - If Chins Could Kill

I was at Halfprice books and I decided I wanted to get Charlie Chaplin's biography, since I had just seen the movie Chaplin. I was looking at the shelf and there was really nothing there that was book like. Just some big tall picture-y books. It made me sad and as I turned away my eye caught on some really big blocky letters reading "bruce campbell"

I didn't even consider not buying it. Never even crossed my mind to look at the price, it could have cost 30 dollars and I would have paid. Same as when I found that awesome old copy of Peter Pan in Kennsignton Gardens. it's a compulsion.

So, for the past few days when I wasn't killing my wrist and shoulder trying to finish Nanowrimo I have been reading the hilarious Autobiography of Bruce Campbell. If Chins Could Kill: Confessions of a B Movie Actor.

I've been a fan of his since I was 8 or so and my dad took me to see Army of Darkness. We watched Brisco, and I watched Xena and Hercules only when he was on. I love him, I lust after him.

The book is great, starting out in his childhood and adventures with his brother all the way through the end of Hercules. The narrative style is so great, just like a string of anecdotes and silly stories. I think I giggled at least once per page, laughed quite out loud every chapter. I learned a lot I didn't know, and got a really interesting look into not just movie making, but doing it all yourself. Its such a great journey he has had and I was enthralled with the telling from start to finish. I've been dropping little factoids on my boyfriend the past few days... I think I'm starting to drive him nuts!

And of course it put me in the mood to watch Evil Dead, so I ran out and got the second one on dvd so I could watch them all, since we already own the other two. I just have to say that I don't quite understand the point of Evil Dead 2. I mean why would any man in his right mind return to the crazy cabin where all his friends died, with a new girlfriend (with the same name as his dead girlfriend), and play the same recording without remembering what had happened? It makes no sense to me.

Regardless, Evil Dead 2 is my favorite of the two. It seems to have been a movie all about Bruce Campbell beating the shit out of himself, and that's well worth the confusing plot continuity.

Back to the book. It rocks!!

Changeover

So I have started a blog on mycraft.com. you can find me here: http://www.mycraft.com/restlesslyrandom

its the perfect environment for a crafty blog so i'm moving my restlessly random crafting side over there. i'm still restlessly random the writer, reader, and music listener and a lover of talking about these things.

my boyfriend isn't much for reading so i have no one to talk books about, and i really enjoyed the posts i did about books. the books that changed my life, and the review of the mists of avalon. so that's what i'm gonna do here now.

talk about my reading and my writing.

woo.

To start i'd like to talk about the National Novel Writing Month for 2008. Throughout the month of november i was writing like a mad woman to expell 50 thousand count 'word vomit' as my auntie-mommhy would call it. I did it. I reached the goal with a few hours to spare. i didn't finish the story, but i won't be giving up on it. Look over on the right side there and you see that i got my little picture for winning, and it's got a pirate ship on it which rules. Go to the site here: http://www.nanowrimo.org/eng/user/407756 you can even read an excerpt from my story (yes there are spelling and grammatical errors. the point is to get the words down as quickly as possible and worry about editing later).

It was a great adventure, and i love that i was able to stick with it and actually reach the goal, especially when, with 4 days to go i was still short 15,000 words. it also got me away from my huge as-yet unnamed fantasy masterpiece at the perfect moment. things had been getting a little foggy in that land and i was having trouble tracking. after a month of not thinking about my other world i can't wait to go back with all the extra little bits i've come up with that make my story just that much tighter.

its funny that, at the moment, the unnamed story is sitting at just over 50 thousand as well... but it took me probably about 4 months to get that far, and i was working from a handwritten draft.

Reason 896 Why I love Matt

Pizza.

i was sitting here at the computer browsing and pretending to do homework, and i was hungry. I know we have little in the way of quick food in the house, and i didn't feel like scrounging so i decided that i just wouldn't eat (healthy, i know) but then i suddenly remembered!! matt brought me home a pizza last night!! a whole pizza!! all for me!!

he doesn't bring home pizza as often as you might think for a person who works in pizza (or maybe you would think it if you knew he's been with the company for 9 years) but every so often i ask and he does and it makes me happy all over the place.

i was already in bed when he got home last night, so i completely forgot about it. but now i'm eating it and it's GOOOOOOD!!

The Mists of Avalon

Yesterday I finished reading The Mists of Avalon by Marion Zimmer Bradley. It was a very long read, I picked it up more than 2 weeks ago and has taken me longer to read than any other book I've read at work. I got it from Half Price Books for only a dollar off the clearance shelf. I was thrilled to say the least. I had yet to read any story about Arthur or his Round Table Knights, I have seen the TV series Merlin, and I once attempted to read The Once and Future King but at the time I was too young and I gave it up.

So I jumped right into The Mists with excitement. Now that I think back to the beginning it seems so far away; Morgaine who seems to be the only surviving character at the end was not even born when the book begins. The Merlin comes to Morgaine's mother Ingraine and explaines to her how Avalon is fading into the mists because people's understanding and belief of how the world is made up is changing. That belief dictates the world and the Church of Christ is wiping away the old faith of the Goddess. I was enthralled at that moment, reading with my mouth gaping open, fallen completely in love.

Perhaps the book got a bit tedious in the middle, what with all the women sitting and spinning, weaving and talking about babies. With Morgaine's constant regret in having Arthur's son, and Gwenhwyfar's pious worrying over Lancelet's love and her own barrenness. But I never felt bored, I never wanted to put it aside to write or craft instead.

I need to take a break though, from these religious books. Very recently I've had read a string of books where the main themes revolve around theology, or a different take on religion. Ben Hur, Angels and Demons, Moby Dick, His Dark Materials... my mind has gone into overload with all this christian and anti-christian (so they say of dark materials) work.

I have always tried to respect other religions and faiths, but it is getting harder and harder to respect Christianity. I say that not as an attack to those who are Christians now, because many of them have been all their lives and it has no longer become a choice. It is the religion itself, and its terrifying and dangerous past.

I am trying to figure out why we as a people turned away from the worship of our earth, which is living and breathing below us, is real and tangible and we can see when we cause it harm, and return to it in death such an obvious way to live on forever in the circle of life. When did we decide to disregard those things that are tangible and turn instead to an invisible and unknown being in the sky who needs you only to repent to gain paradise after death. An unknown power that turned half of us into evil beings and sends down judgement on us from his throne so far from our world.

We no longer even respect our earth, where in the past we worshiped it. Heaven is the great end to life, so why do we need to ensure this planet of ours is healthy and strong for those who come after. I care not whether our society is matriarchal or patriarchal, I only wish that we had sense enough to see that worshiping any God other than the earth and air that supports our life is blasphemy.

Of course, that is only my opinion, and is what I gained as the main idea behind the book. And I realize how strongly I believe this as I write, thinking of Anka and Loba. My own characters in the book that I am writing portray these strong themes of protecting one's world, respecting the life that surrounds you.

The Mists has many differences in it's story than the others about Arthur. It is seen from Morgaine's eyes, and it shows that she was not an evil woman of the fairies, but only a woman with a plan to keep Christ's church from wiping away all thought of the Goddess. I know that the other books will portray her differently when I get around to reading them (The Crystal Cave is next) but I think in my heart I will always defer back to the Mists as my primary knowledge of Arthur's lore.

The book was awesome, definitely earning a spot on my favorite list. Read it if you haven't, it's beautiful and engaging and an amazing story.

Wednesday I Went to the Zoo

My love took me to the zoo on wednesday. He knows I've been feeling down lately, not myself, scratchy inside my skin. He said to me last sunday "How about wednesday we go to the zoo?" and I looked forward to it for the rest of the week.

There he is reading about camels and tigers. He likes to read all the signs, I just like to look at the animals.

I got to see the flamingos

and the giraffes

and i found the ninja frog

and then there were these guys. this is the reason i love the Vilas zoo here in madison. Where else can you see a fenced off pen with a pot bellied pig and Leroy, the Dwarf Zebu?

I figure these guys are like pinky and the brain. they gotta be buddies of the strangest kind. They're in this pen together, over in the corner by the giraffes and they just hang out all day together. I wonder what the pig's name is...

and finally, there was the otters and the seals. in my next life, i hope with all of my soul that i can be some kind of water mammal. otter, seal, walrus, hell, even a penguin would do. i want to spend my life in the water... but i don't wanna be a fish.

and after the zoo we went and swung on the swings and it was blissful. honestly. it was the best part of the day. it was neat too, because instead of woodchips or gravel in the play area it was shredded tires. it was Green, and it put a spring in your step...

So Long Since I've Posted

I made something that I am very proud of and I want to show it off. Back near when I first joined etsy I found a link in the forums somewhere detailing how to make your own body form to use for dressmaking or whatever else you need a form for. It was a simple technique of duct tape over a tshirt, and though I forgot to save the link (or deleted it since), I stored the information away in my brain.

I decided I was sick of modeling my own items in my store. Sometimes it's difficult to get the right photos, and sometimes I'm just not up to getting prettied up to do it.

So I made Eillim. She is named for my Alter Ego, Eillim Enaj (Millie Jane in reverse).

I got a great deal of help with her from my boyfriend who taped up my shoulders and back when I couldn't get to them, and then cut it off me when it was done. Her colors are completely incidental. I bought the two colors of duct tape meaning to vary the colors and make her really cool, but I ended up just using the brown until it was gone, then switching to the teal. I love the asymmetrical pattern that it created.

Her boobs are a bit lopsided, and her neck is funny looking but I don't care. She's already hanging out in my shop modeling some items:

I love her <3

69 Books in 365 Days

I started my job at captel ( http://www.captionedtelephone.com/ ) captioning phone calls for the deaf and hard of hearing one year ago today (yesterday technically, but i haven't slept yet so it's still the 8th to me) . There is a significant amount of time given to the operators between calls, and the length of downtime directly relates to the length of the call. Sometimes downtime only lasts 30 seconds or a minute. Other times you may get 10 to 20. I work until 2am and around 11pm things quiet down so low that most breaks are 5-10 and it totally rocks!!

When I quit from verizon doing a simmilar job I realized I had read a ton of books, but didn't remember which ones, at all. So this time I wrote them all down. 69 of them in all. For my own entertainment I have listed the books below. That's slightly more than a book a week. And you can see that they weren't all nessecarily easy books. I read Ben-Hur!! and nearly the entire Shanara Epic...

So you see how much time there really is every day that i'm getting paid to do whatever I want. If I had spent all of my free time reading instead of crafting, and writing some days i'm sure i could have doubled that number.

I think i'm going to start again, and see if i can beat my record :P

More Days of Dammit Dolls

rosebud collection made a comment on my last dammit doll post (which was some time ago... oops) saying she had never heard of them before, and it got me thinking that i hadn't really described what they were in my first post, just the way i usually make them.

although there isn't much past the way they are made that anyone needs to know. A dammit doll is a stress relieving device. My grandmother, when i made my first one, told me that the doll was made and used in place of the word 'Dammit' or any other swear you feel like spouting. According to the information i gathered on the internet there is also a poem that is supposed to go on the dammit doll.

here's what it says:

Whenever things don't go so well
And you want to hit the wall and yell
Here's a little dammit doll
That you can't do without.
Just grasp it firmly by the legs
And find a place to slam it
And as you whack the stuffing out
Yell, "DAMMIT! DAMMIT! DAMMIT!"

I never even heard of the poem until yesterday. I just put letters on their tummys and that's fine with me :)

It's been 5 days since my last update and my 30 days of dammit dolls has come to a screeching halt. I have run out of stuffing and have no money to buy more. I am sort of sad about it, but i also realized that I haven't been able or had motivation to work on anything else BUT the dammit dolls. So here is the last post with the final 5 dammit dolls. I may start up later, since I did really enjoy it.

So here is the last of the dammit dolls for now. I figured that they could all be put in one day which is why i haven't updated recently. The big part of each dammit doll is actually their secret, which remains secret until someone buys them. So a quick description was all i really needed.

Day 4 was Max. He was made with the fake snake skin from my brother's suit that i can't seem to use up, no matter how i try.

Day 5 was John. I was watching Grosse Pointe Blank, the current movie in my John Cusack binge so i named him for hotty man :D

Day 6 was the little cyclops alien named Timornakari. He's neat. He may be my favorite. He is miniature made from two pieces of yellow fleece. he has no stuffing inside cuz he's so freaking small. The only thing inside of him is his secret (a very very small secret). the initial on his tummy is in his own language and i cannot get a good picture of it, so you'll have to love him no matter what it looks like. not that it's hard with his little cyclops eye and his crazy sticky hair and his incredible smallness. perfect for sticking in your pocket. he can hide out there and when you're feeling like punching someone in the face while they're talking to you, you can reach in and give little Tim a squeeze.

Day 7 is made tomorrow on day 8. I fought with my boyfriend that day and i didn't really feel like sewing. So i made him first thing on day 8 and allowed the same boyfriend to name this guy george. I made him from the sleeve of a shirt i am deconstructing to reconstruct later. This is another pocket doll who is larger than yesterdays, i figured it was allowed because i was making 2 in one day. George is damn cute. and very squishy.

And finally Day 8. Quincy is a large dammit doll that my cat bubz has claimed as his own. I have moved the doll three times out from under him and yet he is still sleeping on him. I may just stick him in bub'z cat house because he seems to be in love and it's cute.

that's it. i'm going to go knit something now :)

30 Days of Dammit Dolls - Day Three

This is Walter. Yes, Walter is covered with flowers, but that doesn't mean he's any less of a man. In fact he's more of a man you will ever be. Also, his size has nothing to do with his manlyness. He fits in the palm of my hand, and he's stretchy and squishy. I made him small mostly because i wanted to use tiny buttons as eyes. His hair is brown purple and white, and his stitching is blue.

he's numbered '3' on the back.

I've also started a paper journal with pieces of the fabric and a place where i can keep their secret safe. I also plan on putting together a large chunk of each type of fabric maybe into a quilt. who knows? i've only got three pieces so far so we'll see in a couple of days.
